  • Superb performance backed by laboratory testing

  • Highly-engineered German acoustic boards with CE Mark

  • Can be used for walls and ceilings

These 1200mm x 800mm boards are a superior performance alternative to one of the layers of standard acoustic plasterboard.

Phonestar SBx 10mm Boards are high-performance, German-engineered acoustic boards that deliver superior soundproofing in a slim, 10mm design. Designed for both residential and commercial spaces, these CE-marked boards are a versatile solution for soundproofing walls, ceilings, and floors. Whether you’re looking to control noise from neighbouring spaces, create a peaceful living environment, or enhance acoustics in music and entertainment rooms, Phonestar SBx Boards offer a powerful, eco-friendly, and space-saving option.

What is an SBx Soundproof Board?

SBx Soundproof Boards are advanced acoustic insulation panels made from a combination of cross-fluted engineered card and hardboard filled with finely compacted quartz sand. This construction provides the boards with high mass, density, and unique self-decoupling properties, making them exceptionally effective at reducing both impact and airborne noise. The SBx 10mm board is the thinner version of the popular 15mm SBx model, designed to fit seamlessly into spaces where a slimmer profile is preferred without sacrificing soundproofing quality.

How Do SBx Acoustic Boards Work?

SBx Acoustic Boards work by utilising their dense sand-filled core and unique structural design to absorb and block sound energy. The cross-fluted card construction, combined with the compacted quartz sand, provides high mass and natural self-decoupling, which helps to break up sound waves and dampen vibrations. These properties make SBx boards exceptionally effective at reducing sound transmission between spaces, as well as improving thermal mass in lightweight structures. When installed, SBx boards act as a dense barrier, effectively trapping sound and reducing the level of noise that can pass through walls and ceilings.

What Type of Noise Do the 10mm SBx Acoustic Boards Stop?

Phonestar SBx 10mm Boards are highly effective at blocking both airborne noise (such as voices, TV sounds, and music) and impact noise (like footsteps, furniture movement, and vibrations). Their high-density construction dampens sound energy, making them ideal for use in spaces where managing multiple types of noise is crucial. The boards are particularly beneficial in areas prone to noise transfer, like party walls, separating walls, and ceilings in multi-level buildings.

Where Can the 10mm SBx Soundproof Boards Be Used?

The 10mm SBx Soundproof Boards are designed to be versatile and can be installed on walls, ceilings, and floors across a variety of settings. They’re perfect for residential properties, offices, entertainment rooms, home studios, and music rooms, as well as in conversions, renovations, and new builds. Whether you’re soundproofing against a noisy neighbour or aiming to improve acoustics within a dedicated room, the SBx boards provide a reliable solution that fits into compact spaces.

How to Install the 10mm SBx Acoustic Boards

  1. Prepare the Surface: Ensure the surface is clean, smooth, and free of dust or debris.
  2. Fit the Boards: Cut the boards to size as needed using a standard saw or utility knife. The boards are designed for easy installation with simple butt joints, eliminating the need for flanking strips.
  3. Secure in Place: Attach the SBx boards to the wall or ceiling surface using appropriate fixings, ensuring a tight fit between each board to maintain a seamless soundproof barrier. For optimal results, consider pairing with 60kg/m³ acoustic mineral wool for enhanced soundproofing.

What Are the Benefits of the SBx Soundproof Boards?

  • Superior Noise Reduction: Blocks both airborne and impact noise effectively, creating a quieter environment.
  • Space-Saving Design: At only 10mm thick, these boards are a slim alternative to standard plasterboard layers, perfect for tight spaces.
  • Eco-Friendly Composition: Made from sustainable, natural materials like cardboard and sand, these boards are pollutant-free, breathable, and odourless.
  • Simple Installation: Easy to cut and install with simple butt joints, making it a user-friendly choice for DIY and professional installers alike.
  • Versatile Applications: Suitable for walls, floors, and ceilings in residential, commercial, and specialised environments like studios and entertainment rooms.
  • Improved Thermal Mass: Enhances thermal performance in lightweight structures, adding insulation alongside soundproofing.

Instructions for use

The SBX board is used in place of a 12.5mm acoustic plasterboard. The product can be screwed in the same way as plasterboard. Cutting and sealing is done in the same way on both 10mm and 15mm SBx boards.

The boards are labelled with a particular side to be facing outwards. This ensures the product lies consistently from board to board.

Cutting SBx Boards to size

  • Ensure careful handling to minimise filler spillage – otherwise the final performance may be compromised
  • Only cut the SBx boards while it is laid flat
  • Use a straight edge for guidance
  • Cut with a jigsaw, hand saw, Stanley knife or circular saw (ceramic tile tungsten carbide grit jigsaw blade, or general purpose tungsten carbide fine tooth circular saw blade, for longevity)
  • Immediately seal all cut edges with PhoneStar SBx Tape while holding the board upright - See below for more details on using SBx Tape
